Our charity pre-school, Springfield Bees, organised a welly walk at the weekend in a local park for all our families. We wanted to create an opportunity for parents and children to get together and make friends, get active and to support the development of the children’s communication and language. Two of our staff have recently been part of a local council pilot to deliver Making It REAL (Raising Early Achievement in Literacy), a family literacy programme.
The children were given checklists with pictures and logos (environmental print) which they had to find hidden around the park, developing their awareness that print and words carry meaning. Afterwards the children could get creative with their own welly boot artwork, whilst staff were on hand to share knowledge about how to support their child’s communication and language skills at home.
