Assessments and tracking progress

Statutory assessments

There are two points of statutory assessments which must be carried out during a child’s time within the early years foundation stage (EYFS).

  1. Progress review between the age of two and three
  2. End of EYFS assessments

The early years foundation stage (EYFS) requires practitioners to observe children as part of their day-to-day interactions with them. This on-going assessment is at the heart of effective early years practice and will inform the two statutory assessments in the prime areas between the ages of 24 and 36 months and the EYFS Profile, at the end of the EYFS. A summary must also be shared with parents.

Following the introduction of the revised EYFS statutory framework for 2021, updated information and guidance will be made available soon.
