What makes a good observation?
Good observation:
- focusses on the learning
- tells you something new about the child
- informs you about their stage of development
- includes the child's voice
- may highlight a next step or area for development
- tells you about the child as a learner
When writing an observation:
- be brief and precise
- record exactly what a child said, not what you think they said
- try not to make assumptions - watch a little longer, interact to find out what is happening
It is good practice to:
- date all observations
- focus on the learning
- link to an area or areas of learning
- link to characteristics of effective learning
- add a best fit band of development
