What makes a good observation?

Good observation:

  • focusses on the learning
  • tells you something new about the child
  • informs you about their stage of development
  • includes the child's voice
  • may highlight a next step or area for development
  • tells you about the child as a learner

 When writing an observation:

  • be brief and precise
  • record exactly what a child said, not what you think they said
  • try not to make assumptions - watch a little longer, interact to find out what is happening

It is good practice to:

  • date all observations
  • focus on the learning
  • link to an area or areas of learning
  • link to characteristics of effective learning
  • add a best fit band of development
